JUST days after donning his cap and the famous green University of Zambia gown, Gilbert Ndlovu found himself crossing the Namibian border, poised for yet another milestone—not in academics, but in sports.
Born in Chibombo district, the 25-year-old Ndlovu is becoming a household name in the fighting arena, particularly after clinching gold at the International Mixed Martial Arts Federation (IMMAF) African Championships held in Namibia from May 27 – June 1 this year.
Ndlovu’s journey began at 16 when he first glimpsed the world of Karate at Ulemu Training Center, inspired by his friends’ practice sessions.
His rapid progress and dedication soon caught the attention of his coaches. Over the next four years, he amassed over 15 medals in various local karate tournaments and earned a black belt in Kyokushin.
Despite his achievements in Karate, Ndlovu’s ambitions soared even higher with the advent of MMA in Zambia.
While pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration with Economics at UNZA, he began training rigorously in MMA, a sport that demanded as much mental fortitude as physical prowess.
Balancing the dual pressures of academics and sports was no easy feat.
“Both sides of my life were demanding, but I love the sport, so I made time for it,” Ndlovu reflected.
His determination paid off, as three years of intense training and late-night study sessions culminated in a selection to represent Zambia at the African Championships in Namibia.
Just three days after his graduation, Ndlovu stepped into the ring against Grácio Lopez.
The match ended in a resounding victory for Ndlovu, earning him the gold medal and marking a historic win for Zambia.
Ndhlovu became first Zambian MMA fighter to clinch gold at the continental championships.
“I was very happy to win the gold medal, and I did it for Zambia because that is what they wanted when we left for Namibia,” he said.
Ndlovu now stands as an inspiration, encouraging young people to be relentless in their pursuits, whether in sports, academics, or any other field.
