THE Permanent Secretary at Ministry of Youth, Sports, and Arts, Kangwa Chileshe has been elected Chairperson of UNESCO’s International Convention against Doping in Sport.

Chileshe will lead 192 member states in promoting fair play and integrity in sports globally.

In his new role, Chileshe will guide international efforts to harmonise anti-doping policies and support sport values and ethics.

During his acceptance speech in Paris, he emphasised the importance of this role in fostering international cooperation and ensuring effective implementation of the Convention.

“This opportunity to guide the group’s activities is important in fostering international cooperation and reinforcing funding mechanisms to fully implement the Convention,” Chileshe said.

Chileshe will serve as the chairman of the Global Open Ended Working Group of the Anti-Doping Convention from 2024 to 2025.

His election follows the decision of the Conference of Parties (COP) 9 Bureau to create a regionally balanced Core Group.

This group will work with the Bureau to develop proposals addressing gaps and inconsistencies in the Convention for the tenth session of the COP.

Naomi Mweemba, First Secretary Press at the Embassy of Zambia in Paris, highlighted Chileshe’s election as a testament to Zambia’s commitment to anti-doping efforts.

“Being the chairman of the Open Ended Working Group, Mr. Chileshe will be tasked with exploring ways to increase the Convention’s impact, sustainability, and governance,” Mweemba said through a statement.
