AS Zambia’s renowned musician, Elton Mulenga (Yo Maps), releases his new song today, the artiste has reiterated the need for competition in the Zambian Music industry.
Addressing the burgeoning talent in Zambia’s music scene, Yo Maps expressed a positive outlook on competition, viewing it as a catalyst for growth.
“Zambian music needs competition, whether we like it or not. For me, I feel…why can’t we all be celebrated?” he questioned.
“At the end of the day, we all want to take Zambia Ku chalo.”
The Try Again hit maker also tackled criticism about the similarity of his sound.
Yo Maps staunchly defended his artistic identity.
“I am Yo Maps, do you want me to sound like General Kanene? That’s my voice, and I can’t change it,” he asserted.
Unafraid to acknowledge emerging talent, Yo Maps highlighted names like Triple M, Xaven, Mordecai and Ozone, recognising their contributions to the Zambian music landscape this far.
Meanwhile, Yo Maps revealed that he feels no pressure to release new music, citing a backlog of over 40 unreleased songs in his repertoire.
Speaking candidly, Yo Maps emphasised his preference for quality over quantity.
“I don’t like to rush. I don’t like to rush things, especially when people say do this, do that, no! I like to take my time.”
“Like I said, I have 40 songs already, so I just pick one and drop it,” he affirmed.
The artist’s sentiments came to light during the premiere of his latest track, “Confirmation,” on Hot FM.
The song features Nigerian sensation Iyanya and blends Afro-pop with Afro-soul, infused with a hint of RnB.
In “Confirmation,” Yo Maps passionately professes his love to a woman named Jennifer, whom he believes is heaven-sent. “You are the one that God sent to me. I got confirmation, heavenly confirmation,” croons the chorus, capturing the essence of the track.
Confirmation has over 260,000 views on YouTube in seven hours.
