FOUR lives have been lost while several were left injured in a fatal road accident along the Ndola highway at Katanino Trading Area, approximately 45 kilometers north of Kapiri Mposhi district.
According to Police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga, preliminary investigations suggest that the accident occurred today when the driver of the Hino Ranger attempted an improper overtaking maneuver, resulting in a collision with the oncoming tanker truck.
“Four male passengers from the Hino Ranger light truck have tragically lost their lives as follows: Mr. Morton Chonga, aged 35, Mr. Teddy Chibele, aged 30 – both deceased on the spot.”
“Mr. Coin Hamwiza, aged 45, [and] one unknown male – both died whilst receiving treatment at the hospital,” revealed Hamoonga.
He said their bodies have been transferred to the Kapiri Mposhi District Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem examination.
Among those injured, eleven passengers sustained serious injuries and are currently undergoing treatment at Kapiri Mposhi District Hospital.
” In addition to the fatalities, the following individuals sustained serious injuries:Mr. Mwiinga Kiphinedy, aged 27, Mr. Boyd Kantin, aged 27, Mr. Mudenda Mapenzi, aged 30, Mr. Chizala Pesi, aged 36, Mr. Trail Hamwiza, aged 40, Mr. Munenda Kizito, Ms. Milimo Joyce (adult), Mr. Chris Lubasi (adult), Mr. Tryford Hakunyu (adult)” disclosed Hamoonga.
Hamoonga added that two unidentified females are currently unconscious and receiving medical attention.
All injured individuals are from Monze and have been admitted to Kapiri
Meanwhile, efforts are currently underway to locate the driver of the Hino Ranger light truck, who is reportedly at large.
“The Zambia Police Service extends its heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of the deceased and wishes a swift recovery to those injured in the accident,” said Hamoonga, emphasising the importance of road safety.
“We urge all road users to exercise caution, adhere to traffic regulations, and prioritize safety at all times to prevent such tragic incidents in the future,” Hamoonga added.
