CHIEFS Mazimawa and Lumpuma of the Ngoni and Lamba speaking people respectively, have urged the Zambian government to streamline bureaucracy in implementing irrigation projects to combat the ongoing drought.
Speaking on ZNBC’s Sunday Interview chief Mazimawa emphasised the need for immediate action
“We know that government has some bureaucracies to follow before implementing some interventions but since the situation is a disaster, government should forgo some protocols so that those who might have opportunities to utilise irrigation systems can do so before the offset of the rains.” chief Mazimawa said.
Acknowledging President Hakainde Hichilema’s announcement regarding the soon-to-commence irrigation system for commercial farmers, Chief Lumpuma stressed the importance of prioritizing small-scale farmers.
“People expect a lot from the government and it is important for them to come earlier with this irrigation system because if they keep waiting, it will not help the situation especially for small scale farmers” he remarked.
In addition to addressing government action, the chiefs urged residents of bordering towns to safeguard their remaining food supplies and refrain from selling maize to briefcase buyers.
Chief Mazimawa highlighted the importance of prioritising food security amidst increasing demand from neighbouring countries also facing drought challenges.
“We have Mozambique and Malawi as our neighbours and we are aware that these countries are equally facing the same drought situation and it is normal for them to come here to look for maize,” he said while cautioning against selling to briefcase buyers.
“People should not start selling their maize to brief case buyers but they should keep the little that they have until we strive to reach the next farming season.”
