AS muslims approach the half mark of the fasting month of Ramadan, a preacher in the Zambian capital, Lusaka has urged believers to ensure the positive change behaviour and character is permanent.
Zambian Muslims, like their counterparts around the globe are currently abstaining from food, drink and intimate bedroom activities for married couples from dawn to sunset in observance of the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar.
During this month which lasts 30 and sometimes 29 days, Muslims are expected to be at their best behaviour giving charity, observing their prayers and being dutiful to family and neighbours.
Believers should avoid quarrels, cheating of any kind and harming others.
Giving a sermon at Lusaka’s grand Mosque, Jaame Masjid during the Friday prayers this afternoon, Adil Majid stressed the importance of fasting which is the third pillar of Islam.
Majid told the congregation at Jaame that the month of Ramadan was to be used to permanently “burn” bad habits opposed to shelving them for later use.
He preached that fasting would be meaningless if believers simply shelved their bad habits during the month of fasting and picked them up afterwards.
He urged believers to engage in sincere repentance with the intention of not going back on their sins.
The youthful precher reminded the congregation that a true Muslim is one during the fasting period avoided to look at, hear and speak that which is forbidden while avoiding to harm others.
Majid said for fasting to be meaningful, believers should strive to sustain and and practice the good habits and behaviour cultivated during Ramadan throughout the year.
