THE Center for Trade Policy and Development (CTPD) has hosted the second Youth Symposium on Tobacco Control with over 90 young people drawn from various Lusaka Universities in attendance.
This year’s Youth Symposium was held under the theme” Zambia @60 #PassTheTobacco Control Bill”.
CTPD Mobilization and Campaigns Officer Given Kapolyo appealed to President Hakainde Hichilema to intervene and save the lives of young people who are hooked to Tobacco smoking.
And the President leaned to listen to the plea of Young People.
Meanwhile, CTPD Acting Executive Director Moscane Hampongo emphasized the need to enact the Tobacco Control Bill as it remains key in protecting and preserving the lives of the present and future generation from the harms of tobacco consumption.
Tobacco Free Association of Zambia (TOZAFA) executive director Brenda Chitindi explained the history of the Tobacco Control journey in Zambia and why the World Health Organisation Framwork Convention on Tobacco Control is important to Zambia.
An Oncologist from the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) Ngosa Mumba delved into discussions around the health risks of Tobacco use and highlighted the promotion of healthy lifestyle choices for Young People.
This included an examination of the impact of
Tobacco use on Zambia’s health sector and why it was important to have a law that controls tobacco consumption.
Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) investigations officer Inutu Njobvu gave a talk on the importance of preventing Youth access to Illicit Tobacco Products.
Her talk was followed by a session led by the WHO focal point, Agatha Shula who gave an update on the emerging issues on the Tobacco Control Bill and why it was important to continue pressing government till the bill is enacted.
