PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema says every province in the country deserves to have a public university.
Speaking at the National Youth Indaba yesterday, President Hichilema stated that the United Party For National Development (UPND) government will continue investing in education.
He noted that the aim of putting up public universities in every province is to ensure that the system is decentralized.
President Hichilema said having youths move from far away places to other provinces for education is unacceptable.
“We can’t expect kids, youths to move from Mwinilunga from Ikeleng’e to go to Mulungushi University to go to Levy Mwanawasa University to go to UNZA (University of Zambia) it’s difficult,” he shared.
“We are looking into this matter. When you hear me say that you must know already that the planning is already in high gear.”
The Head of State said Government is waiting for some things to conclude, one of them being the debt restructuring.
He promised that once the debt restructuring is concluded it will give his government more headroom to do what is right such as having a public university in every province.
“We are one unitary state and all provinces must benefit. Currently we have a distortion, one province will have three four universities, another province has none, that’s a distortion,” stressed the President.
