Mwamba in New York

Minister of Community Development and Social Services Doreen Mwamba is leading the Zambian delegation at the 68th Session of the Commission on Status of Women in New York.

According to a statement released by
The Permanent Mission of the Republic of Zambia to the United Nations First Secretary Press and Public Relations Namatama Njekwa the Session is taking place under the theme: “Accelerating the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls by addressing poverty and strengthening institutions and financing with a gender perspective”.

Njekwa said the Session kicked off with the General Discussion, which will go on until March 19, where Mwamba will deliver Zambia’s National Statement.

According to the statement Mwamba is also expected to make an intervention at the Ministerial roundtable on the theme, “Mobilising financing for gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls: Policies and strategies to end women’s and girls’ poverty”.

It was revealed that on the margins of the Conference, the minister is scheduled to officiate at a side event on the Girl’s Education and Women’s Empowerment and Livelihood Project sponsored by Zambia.

Njekwa noted that Zambia has also sponsored a side event on the Impact of the Coaching Boys into Men in Prevention of Violence Against Women which will also be held on the sidelines of the Conference.

Mwamba will further participate in an event entitled, Parliamentarians as drivers for women’s empowerment and another event on Gender Sensitive Parliaments: Advancing Gender Equality to End Poverty events.

“And Hon. Mwamba will hold separate bilateral meetings with her counterparts, Ms Antonia Orellana, Minister of Women and Gender Equity of Chile and Sweden’s Minister of Gender Equality, Ms. Paulina Brandberg on issues of mutual interest to Zambia,” explained Njekwa.

“The Commission on the Status of Women (CSW68), which is the UN’s annual gathering on gender equality and women’s empowerment, has brought together Government officials, Civil Society Organisations, experts and activists from across the world to agree on actions and investments that can end women’s poverty and advance gender equality.”
