ZAMBIA Air Force (ZAF) commander Lieutenant General Colin Barry says Zambia will extend her contribution towards peace-keeping operations, in support of the United Nations (UN)’s efforts to maintain tranquility and security across the world.
Lt Gen Barry re-affirmed Zambia’s commitment towards supporting the peace-keeping efforts in line with President Hakainde Hichilema’s resolution to safeguard regional peace, when he visited the United Nations Department Peace Operations (UNDPO) headquarters in New York last week.
During a meeting with the UN Office of Military Affairs (OMA) advisor, General Birame Diop and secretary general for peace operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix Lt General Barry said the ultimate success of peace-keeping efforts depends largely on the active and sustainable political will and processes.
He said the head of State has demonstrated his commitment to supporting peace-keeping efforts in the SADC region by contributing troops and military observers to various UN peace operations and has since aportioned resources to the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) Mission in Mozambique (SAMIM).
Lt Gen Barry said Zambia is ready for pre-deployment training and equipment and gain experience from the SAMIM and other UN peace operations, to undertake peacekeeping operations.
“Zambia has pledged more assets in the Peacekeeping Capability Readiness Systems (PCRS) because it is important to provide African solutions to Africa’s problems as home-grown solutions are often holistic in nature,” Lt Gen Barry said.
General Diop applauded the Zambia Army female engagement team in the Central African Republic (CAR) for their competence in handling cases of sexual exploitation and violence.
He said Zambia’s participation in regional military peace operations were valued as they contribute to the attainment of world peace.
General Diop noted that Zambia’s record in peacekeeping operations is admirable and the Country is ranked the 20th World’s largest contributor of troops and equipment as it contributes 19% of women in peace operations higher than the World average at eight per cent.
Meanwhile, Lacroix eulogised Zambia for her professionalism in peace-keeping operations.
He said Zambian troops exhibit excellent and good levels of discipline, which his office is notified about.
