POLICE say they have arrested and detained three members of the Socialist Party including, Dr Fred M’membe.
The arrests stem from a clash between UPND supporters and Socialist Party members during campaigns for a by-election in Serenje yesterday.
During the violent clash that has resulted in injuries, Socialist Party president Dr M’membe is said to have fired several gun shots in the air.
Zambia Police deputy spokesperson Danny Mwale said Dr M’membe had been charged with Unlawful Discharge of a Firearm as well as Assault Occasioning Actual Bodly Harm (OABH).
Dr M’membe’s two other comrades have also been charged with Assault Occasioning Actual Bodly Harm (OABH).
“They are all alleged to have assaulted nine suspected members of the United Party for National Development members,” Mwale told Kalemba in a statement.
“Two suspected Socialist Party members also sustained injuries during the violence which occurred when the two political parties clashed while conducting their campaigns at four ways in Mwalilima and Kamalamba area of Serenje District in Central Province on April 8, 2023 between 14:00 hours and 16:30 hours,” Mwale added.
He said Police had launched a manhunt for the UPND cadres involved in the violence while Dr M’membe and his two comrades were in police detention waiting to be formally charged.
“We have since beefed up security in Serenje District in order to restore and maintain law and order,” Mwale said.
