UNIVERSITY of Zambia (UNZA) students are corking their voices to emulate their Copperbelt University counterparts in shouting “Zangena” as they recieve government-paid meal allowances for the first time since 2019.
Last October, scores of UNZA students poured out on the streets of Lusaka in jubilation of President Hakainde Hichilema’s new dawn government pronouncement that it had reinstated meal allowances that had been scrapped of by PF in 2019.
In a few days time, that pronouncement will become reality for the UNZA students like it was for CBU last February.
UNZASU president Chandra Choongo revealed that several eligible students had been screened and several more were being screened in readiness for the meal allowances galore.
“Utimately, only a few days remaining for shouts of ‘Zangena’ to be heard from old residence hostels through new residence hostels to Vet hostels,” Choongo told Kalemba in a statement.
Choongo said there was a wave of anxiety and excitement sweeping through the Great East Road campus as students coming from far and wide awaited their share of the meal allowances.
“All in all, I want to extend my gratitude to His Excellency President Hakainde Hichilema for making it possible again through the Ministry of Education and I want to state my firm belief and faith in the good will of your leadership towards the student loans appealed and those who applied for a change of status to GRZ sponsorship that you will consider them in numbers,” added Chandra.
