ZAMBIA needs to tackle issues that arise during elections like transparency in some processes, before elections commence, Christian Churches Monitoring Group (CCMG) has disclosed.
Speaking during a media breakfast, CCMG programmes manager Peter Mwanang’ombe said there is need to monitor election processes such as the issuance of national registration cards (NRCs), updating electoral reforms and policies, among others.
Mwanang’ombe said this will enhance credibility of the electoral process, free participation of people and integrity of elections.
He noted that there were stumbling blocks towards this such as the lack of stakeholder participation in the implementation of the integrated national registration information systems (INRIS) which aims digitalizing a citizens credentials.
“There is no participation of stakeholders in the implementation of the INRIS other than the government.
“You and me know that NRC issuance is the beginning of problems, there are allegations of under age voters, that arise from the process and also the issue of foreigners voting,” Mwanang’ombe said.
“Once we create a transparent process where everyone is able to participate, that will reduce the number of questions being raised.”
Mwanan’gombe also said Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has not allowed anyone to monitor the continuous voter registration exercise, which is a problem as the process needs to be monitored.
He also noted that the preliminary report of the previous national census did not capture key data aspects like the population spread at ward level, voters age population and others.
“Our interest is to see how our population is spread across the wards because this information is useful for voter registration,” said Mwanang’ombe.
