IN less than seven hours from now, Zambian grannies who are participating in the Mama Beka Grannies International Football Tournament (GIFT) will be on the pitch sweating, in search of victory against South African grannies.
The tournament is taking place in Nkowankowa township in Limpopo Province of South Africa, where Rebecca Ntsanwisi, popularly known as Mama Beka, hails from.
She is a celebrated philanthropist who runs the Mama Beka Ntsanwisi Foundation, that is now sponsoring the football tournament comprising six countries.
The tournament kicked off yesterday, with colourful off-the-pitch displays.
Today, Zambia’s grannies will have to show what they are made of, as they face off, in a 50 minute encounter, with grannies from South Africa.
After watching the match involving the United States of America (USA) and Limpopo grannies at Nkowankowa Stadium yesterday, many Zambian grannies feel they have more skill and power to record a positive result, unlike the Oswald Mutapa-coached Under 23 national team that recently flew to Cairo in Egypt for a loss and back to Zambia for a draw in Ndola yesterday.
Zambian grannies team manager Patricia Chaile Musokota, in an interview ahead of today’s showdown, said: “we don’t want to disappoint our country.”
“We are ready for the match that is coming tomorrow (today). Our aim is to get the trophy,” Musokota said.
“This tournament is so important to us; we are not just looking at the benefits that are coming with it. For us, it is the physical benefits that we are going to get from this tournament. It is a way of relieving stress in us – making us physically fit.”
She added that the Mama Beka tournament has made grannies to get exposed to different things because: “we are meeting people from different countries.”
Meanwhile, Zambian grannies coach Collins Muma indicated that every player in the squad is ready to face any challenge.
“The players are very fit and I can say they are injury-free. All thanks to the medical team that is doing a very good job. Our main objective is to come out of this tournament as champions,” said Muma.
Major Charity Sitimela is the team doctor while Enock Kahalu is the team’s physiotherapist.
