AS he turned 38 yesterday, Patauke Central member of parliament Emmanuel ‘Jayjay’ Banda chose to mark his new age with a K20,000 donation to victims of Cyclone Freddy which has claimed more than 500 lives neighbouring Malawi.
Â
Driven by 2012 Africa Cup of Nations winning midfielder Chisamba Lungu the Malawi Embassy in Lusaka and escorted by Banwell Mpundu a fellow independent lawmaker, Banda handed two bricks of hundred kwacha notes amounting to K20,000 to that country’s high commissioner Margaret Kamoto.
Â
Banda left Parliament momentarily to take the short drive to the High Commission.
Â
Speaking as he handed over, Banda said he chose to remember his relatives in Malawi than to go out merry his birthday with his friends.
Â
“Malawi is my second home, because my grand father came from there,” said Banda.
Â
Banda further told the Malawian High Commissioner to Zambia that he would visit the cyclone Freddy victims when Parliament closes.
Â
And in receiving the donations, Kamoto thanked the lawmaker for the gesture.
Â
Kamoto said she was delighted for the support rendered to the cyclone Freddy victims.
Â
She said Banda was a well-raised child who upholds his culture and norms of standing with the mourning community.
Â
“Zambia and Malawi shares alot. They share history and culture. In our culture when one is mourning, the all village mourns. We are grateful for standing with us when most parts of Malawi has been hit with cyclone Freddy.” She said.
