This year’s International Women’s Day, which falls today, ie being commemorated under the theme: Digitall: Innovation and technology for gender equality.
Â
MDC national women’s chairlady Nomsa Ingwe, in a statement today, says women are now able to use technology to advance their careers, both on economic and political fronts.
“As women commemorate this important day, they must realise that they are capable of breaking barriers when they succeed and work together,” Ingwe stated.
She added that technology has, over the years, proved to be an effective tool to raise awareness and call for women’s involvement in peace and security processes, decision-making and leadership positions.
Ingwe further stated that just as mobile phones and the Internet form part of people’s daily livelihoods, technology and innovation have managed to bring together women’s voices across the world, who were once confined in the kitchen.
“A gender responsive approach through innovation will also be a true reflection in the acknowledgement and awareness of the gender gap and how women’s experiences are integrated in the design of innovative solutions,” she stated.
She added that if used appropriately, social media and technology bring about gender equality and curb the everyday rising cases of Gender-Based Violence (GBV).
