VICE-PRESIDENT Mutale Nalumango says government will alleviate the digital gender inequality by creating a favourable environment for women and girls to have adequate access to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
The Vice-President noted that there is low participation of women and girls in the relevant fields, which are male-dominated, due to inadequate technology exposure.
Officiating at year’s International Women’s Day (IWD) commemorations at Godfrey ‘Ucar’ Chitalu Stadium in Kabwe this afternoon, Vice-President Nalumango stressed the need to expose women to Information and Communication Technology (ICT), to ensure gender equality.
This year’s IWD is themed: Digitall: Innovation and technology for gender equality.
She expressed concern that despite the importance of Science and Technology in socio-economic development in Zambia, most women and girls have been disadvantaged to access information and technology, as they are burdened with work.
The Vice-President indicated that the government will purposely implement policies and programmes which are targeted at women and marginalised groups, to promote gender equity and equality in all fields.
“This gender responsive approach to innovation, technology and digital education, will increase the awareness of women and girls regarding their rights and civic engagement, as well as achieving the aspirations of the Eighth National Development Plan, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and ultimately the vision 2030,” she said.
“As a citizenry, we are reminded of our duty to protect the rights of women and girls in the digital space by curbing Gnder-Based Violence, which is on the increase in the digital space.”
At the same event, Non-governmental Organisations’ Coordinating Council (NGOCC) Board chairperson Grace Sinkamba urged women to be innovative and to utilise digital education for their empowerment.
She said digital revolution poses a risk to the digital divide, as most services like marketing, banking, information and education have moved to the digital space, yet women lack the knowledge and access to technology.
Meanwhile, United Nations (UN)’s World Food Programme (WFP) country director and representative for Zambia Cissy Byenkya said there is need for a collective action, in order to achieve gender equality, by protecting women from information ICT GBV.
She said the UN, in collaboration with its sponsors Ireland, Finland and Sweden, together with supporting partners in the civil society, has committed its support to realising the collective vision to push boundaries forward for women, girls and boys in order to achieve gender equality.
