MONGU town dwellers will resort to eating their usual delicacy of hopanis, after the town’s favourite eating place, Hungry Lion, was found selling decomposed chickens.
Unknown to them, Mongu residents had been lining up at their prized Barotse Mall, where the outlet is situated, to get themselves chips and pieces of chicken, to sort of draw themselves closer to civilisation.
What they did not know is that such chicken pieces had long lost their freshness, due to overstaying.
But maybe due to distortion of taste buds caused by many years of swallowing litapi, consumers could not easily tell that what they were eating had moved from being “fresh milk to mabisi,” in chicken form.
It took the Mongu Municipal Council, through the public health department, to move in and shut down the outlet, to save innocent lives.
According to a statement issued by Mongu Municipal Council public relations officer Emmanuel Lupikisha, the reason for the closure is that personnel from the council’s public health department discovered 60 kilogrammes of rotten chicken at the chicken and chips eatery.
He stated that discovery of such rotten food is contrary to the food safety Act No. 7 of 2019 and public health Act Cap 295 of the laws of Zambia.
“This was done during the routine inspections by health inspectors in the wake of [the] cholera outbreak,” Lupikisha stated.
The council has since given conditions which have to be met, before the Hungry Lion shop can re-open in the Western Province capital town.
Those conditions border on matters of supreme hygiene, and not such things as Hungry Lion stocking, for instance, litapi and chips, sindambi, mwanja, ngulu, shombo or meat for hopanis (monitor lizards).
“The Hungry Lion restaurant will open once all measures are put in place, including the fixing of the leaking roof,” he stated.
“The local authority intensified surveillance on all food handling premises as a way to prevent cholera in the district following the surge of cholera case in the country.”
Lupikisha stated that the Mongu Municipal Council is calling on all business houses and residents, to maintain high levels of hygiene, to help in the fight against cholera.
“Members of the public are advised to report cases of being served not-well-prepared foods and suspected rotten food items to the local authority,” stated Lupikisha.
With this rotten luck that has befallen Mongu residents, due to rotten chickens at Hungry Lion, young Lozi ladies and ‘gentrimen’ will now be simply trekking to see the beautiful Mongu-Kalabo road, for romantic outings.
Others are arguing that it is the parsimonious nature of many Mongu residents that has resulted in chicken pieces to start rotting, for they only sparingly buy.
For now, it is back to default settings in Mongu; no more questions of “chilli or no chilli” at Barotse Mall.
Presently, the menu score board at Barotse Mall reads: Mongu Litapi 10, Hungry Lion chickens 0.
