WITH a score of 8.7 million votes, two-term governor of Lagos State Bola Ahmed Tinubu, 70, of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), has been declared the winner of Nigeria’s disputed presidential election.

He served as Lagos State governor from 1999 to 2007.

Nigerians voted on February 25, 2023.

A total of 18 presidential candidates were on the ballot, albeit only three stood a realistic chance of emerging winners.

Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Tinubu as the President-elect today.

Nigeria is Africa’s most populous country, with about 219 million people.

93.5 million of that number were registered to vote this year, out of which 48 million were youths.

President-elect Tinubu, an accountant by profession, stood under the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Outgoing President Muhammadu Buhari could not contest because he has served two presidential terms, as per the Constitution of Nigeria.

One can serve as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for only two terms (four years each).

President Buhari assumed power in 2015.

Official results released by the INEC today show President-elect Tinubu with 36.6 per cent of the vote (about 8.7 million votes).

Serial presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar got 29 per (about 6.9 million votes).

Abubakar, 76, served as Nigeria’s Vice-President from 1999 to 2007, during the presidency of Olusegan Obasanjo.

Abubakar first attempted to stand as President in 1993 on the Social Democratic Party ticket, but lost the primaries.

He was on the presidential ballot in 2007 under the Action Congress ticket and came out third.

Abubakar lost the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) primaries in 2011 and was not on the presidential ballot.

In 2015, he lost the APC primaries to Buhari, and was not on the presidential ballot.

Abubakar, however, made it on the presidential ballot in 2019 under the PDP banner and lost to Buhari.

Abubakar’s third appearance on the ballot was this year and he has, yet again, lost and came out second.

In third place was Labour Party’s 61 year old Peter Obi, who got 26 per cent (6.1 million votes).

With Tinubu declared as the winner, opposition parties say there is a lack of transparency with the new electronic voter system.

Officials of both the PDP and the Labour Party walked out of the venue where results were being announced.

President-elect Tinubu, once sworn-in, will be Nigeria’s 16th President.

Nigeria’s next elections will be in February 2027.
