CRIMINALS hiding under the banner of the UPND will not be protected, ruling party spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa has warned.
Â
Mweetwa said President Hakainde Hichilema and the UPND were presiding over a government of laws.
Â
He said this in reaction to the arrest of Luapula Province deputy permanent secretary Roy Mwansa, Nchelenge district commissioner Musonda Mutepuka and Mwansabombwe district commissioner Molton Sikazwe, in connection with the theft and illegal transportation of sugilite – a mineral common in that region.
Â
On Monday, police also arrested Mongu mayor Nyambe Muyumbana for staging unsanctioned non title fights he used to assault an ambitious Kambule ward councillor Jimmy Kaumba whom he suspects is after his seat.
Â
During a press briefing in Lusaka this morning, Mweetwa, who is also Southern Province minister, welcomed the arrests of the government officials.
Â
Mweetwa said the arrests were meant to send a signal to offenders and would-be offenders that if they stand against the law, the law will come and visit them, regardless of who they are.
Â
He added that when a government official under the UPND government violates the law of the land, they will be dealt with, according to the law of the land and that if a UPND official violates the party’s constitution, they will be dealt with, under the confines of the UPND constitution.
Â
“We want to indicate that anyone who wants to use police officers in order to cover illegalities will not get their way regardless of their political affiliation,” said Mweetwa.
Â
“There won’t be any sacred cow.”
