PF presidential aspirant Greyford Monde says former president Edgar Lungu remains the biggest factor in the former ruling party, almost two years after losing power to President Hakainde Hichilema and the UPND.
Monde who along with seven other candidates are eyeing the PF presidency has been quoted by the Daily Revelation saying should Lungu want to return to the helm of the PF, the former agriculture and fisheries minister will gladly withdraw from the race and leave way for the former Head of State.
Although Lungu has not come out publicly, those around him have revealed that he is preparing a political comeback after he being convinced that he is the only one who can unseat President Hichilema in 2026.
Lungu believes his leadership is being missed in the width and breadth of the country on account of escalating prices of essential commodities.
Daily Revelation reported that Monde would not challenge Lungu as as he and the rest of the presidential candidates’ success while serving the previous Government were because of “the tutorship and leadership of president Edgar Lungu.”
He said Lungu remained a guiding leader and is the biggest factor in the Patriot Front, adding that he is held in high esteem.
And PF sympathiser, Chanoda Ngwira said Lungu is just like any other citizen who qualifies to stand for any election in this country regardless of home being a former head of state or not, hence it is his right.
However, Ngwira told Kalemba that the former head of state categorically stated that he is retired from active politics.
He said Lungu is enjoying the state of being the second PF presidential and a statesman, “people can only state that Lungu is coming back when a statement giving a different view or stance is given by him.”
Chanoda however urged his colleagues in the PF and those close to the former president not to push Lungu into making a decision that he may regret or not.
He added that Lungu should choose for himself on whether to return or not as pushing him to come back or not may turn back against the supporters and he may come back to blame them for being misled.
“If today he (Lungu) says he wants to stand, the central committee will sit down consult the general membership and give their position,” he said. “But as for Chonoda, I still say my positions would be stated as and when he (Lungu) states that ( he is coming back).”
