REA, Gwembe council gang up to defeat valley darkness

THERE might have been no one blowing nyeele (flute) or dancing to Budima, but it was evident that joy was all over the faces of natives of Gwembe yesterday.

Gwembe is a valley district in Southern Province.

The source of happiness for locals is the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Rural Electrification Authority (REA) and Gwembe town council at the civic centre in Munyumbwe area.

The signed MoU will see darkness kicked out from many homes in the humid district.

A delegation from REA, led by chief executive officer Linus Chanda, paid a courtesy call on Gwembe town council chairperson Collet Ndlovu at his office.

Gwembe town council secretary Maliwa Muchuu and Gwembe district commissioner Killion Chikandula were also present.

After the courtesy call, an MoU was signed in the council chamber and Gwembe member of parliament Tyson Simuzingili witnessed the signing.

In this year national budget, the government set aside over K743 million towards rural electrification.

The REA implements such projects as grid development, solar and small hydro mini-grids and solar home systems.

“Rural electrification, especially in developing countries, is a massive social programme whose investment cost is remarkably huge,” said engineer Chanda.

For Muchuu, the issue of access to electricity is very critical to Gwembe.

“We have people who are fishing; why can’t they add value to whatever products they are getting? All that we need is electricity! We want to add value to the raw materials that we have as Gwembe,” said Muchuu.

“As we all know, electricity is an enabler to the economy. Once we have electricity here, most of the things will be easier for us.”

On his part, Ndlovu noted that most of the areas in Gwembe have no access to electricity.

“We just have power along the main road. But there are other areas in the 12 wards of Gwembe that have no electricity, yet we have health centres, schools in those areas,” said Ndlovu.

“So, your coming as REA to partner with us as a local authority is a positive move. We will work together with you and make sure that our district is connected to power.”

Meanwhile, Simuzingili said the people of Gwembe are excited and highly expectant that after many years of living in darkness, “the new dawn government, through the Rural Electrification Authority, has embarked on this initiative where our district will electrified.”

“There is no doubt that this MoU will help to increase access to electricity in Gwembe. Increased access to electricity will not only lighten up people’s homes but also play a critical role in unlocking the potential in various sectors of the economy, such as tourism, agriculture, among others,” Simuzingili said.

He added that Gwembe is not different from any of its sister valley districts, in terms of having potential to develop.

“But the challenge that we have had over the years is [poor] road connectivity. Which investor will be willing to finish their tyres on these roads?” said Simuzingili.

“With the coming of REA, I’m pretty sure that many other investors will come. This will, in turn, increase productivity and create jobs for our youths in the community.”
