THOUSNDS of Copperbelt University students in Kitwe yesterday almost raptured the muscles in charge of their vocal cords as they screamed their heads off in gratitude to President Hakainde Hichilema who visited the institution for the first time after reinstating meal allowances.

The Head of State himself was lucky to survive from being blown away by the wave of ecstasy that was thrown at him by the students in their thousands.

Bally, as President Hichilema has come to be fondly known, arrived to a mind-blowing reception when he visited the country’s second highest learning institution on a rainy day, though the mood was not dump.

In the company of ministers Elisha Matambo (Copperbelt Province), Peter Kapala (energy), Frank Tayali (transport and logistics) and Paul Kabuswe (mines), and his political affairs aide Levy Ngoma, among others, the President arrived at the CBU’s Jambo Drive campus and there was organised chaos among scores of students.

The presidential security detail sweated for its money to ensure that President Hichilema finds his way to the huge multi-purpose hall within the campus, where a larger crowd of animated students waited.

Once he was inside the hall, there was earsplitting noise among the students, that risked the hall’s rooftop being blown away, and consequently needing the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) for emergency aid.

When it was time to sing the national anthem, the students did so, with startling liveliness – as if to win an instant prize.
The incentive behind all that spectacle of bliss by the students is the UPND government’s re-introduction of a meal allowance to all government-sponsored students in public universities.

On February 6, 2019, the fallen PF regime, through Professor Nkandu Luo, the minister at the then Ministry of Higher Education, announced that meal allowances for the University of Zambia (UNZA) and CBU students had been abolished.

But in his 2023 national budget that was made in September 2022, Minister of Finance and National Planning Dr Situmbeko Musokotwane announced that meal allowances would be re-introduced, effective January 2023.

Government-sponsored students in public universities are now receiving their monthly stipend and CBU students, for instance, received theirs on Thursday, February 9, 2023.

Speaking to the enchanted students yesterday, President Hichilema started by congratulating them on making it to the University.

“There are many people who wanted to come here but couldn’t make it. But you made it; congratulations to all of you,” President Hichilema said.

“The present and the future of our country nimwebo (is you).”

He also thanked them for voting “wisely” in the August 12, 2021 general elections.

“Mukwai, twamitotela. You voted like true intellectuals. Intellectuals analyse, evaluate, assess and make the right decision,” President Hichilema said.

The President asked the cheering crowd if they could allow those who once abolished the meal allowance to return to power.
A coordinated response of no echoed.

“We will never ever allow a violent people again in this country. We will work hard and dismantle problems one by one. Free education is down! Now we want to create more jobs for you,” said President Hichilema, and then jived into a jingle of Zangena, Zangena.

“If you see me travelling, you see Bally kuchalo, I’m bringing good things for Zambia and you. You go to Washington to go and negotiate for deals that are good for students, not to go and dance there. I’m very happy to be here today and to see you happy. Natubombele capamo mukwai (let us work together). God bless you all.”

Before retreating to his seat of honour, President Hichilema moved from either side of the platform, blowing air kisses to a thrilled, screaming crowd.
