ACTING President Mutale Nalumango says government is working to better citizens’ lives by taking them out of poverty and improving their livelihoods.

Speaking when she met special envoy for Food Security and climate change Dr Cary Fowler and USAID Global Food Crisis Coordinator Dina Esposito at her office in Lusaka, Nalumango said she was delighted that the diplomats chose to visit Zambia to discuss food and nutrition’s agenda and Agriculture in general.

“Zambia is a democratic country under a government that wants to make sure that there is a rule of law, that want to make sure that our people enjoy their rights. Generally, what we want as a government is that our people’s livelihood change from poverty to a more meaningful livelihood, indeed there are many challenges and that’s why we appreciate your coming,” Nalumango said.

She said she was particularly elated that the meeting would see how the two parties would sustain the livelihood of Zambians under the climate change being experienced worldwide.

“We need to come together and truly find ways together as humanity, your visit is very important to us. I know of this new initiative where we have been picked as one of the pilot countries where we are talking of how to move forward in Agriculture and food production,” she said.

The Acting President further appreciated and noted that already Zambia has been working well with the US government, particularly through the USAID.

She said her office is a Coordinating headquarters thus was eager to concretize the manner in which the two entities ensure that projects and programmes regarding their collaboration is well cemented.

Dr Fowler, the U.S. Department of State Special Envoy for Global Food Security who was joined by Esposito, the USAID Global Food Crisis Coordinator are in Lusaka for meetings with government officials and stakeholders on the regional food security crisis.

Special Envoy Fowler and Coordinator Esposito will promote local partnerships through the new Accelerated Innovation Delivery Initiative, which seeks to support smallholder farmers with the resources and tools to overcome high food and fertilizer prices and adapt to the climate crisis.

Dr Fowler and Coordinator Esposito will also visit Feed the Future programs supporting climate resilient farming and nutrition diversification and will discuss the U.S. strategy for addressing the global food security crisis.
