Government may introduce ZNS voluntary training for young people – Hichilema

PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema says if he had a way, he could have re-introduced compulsory Zambia National Service (ZNS) for young people.

Meanwhile, President Hichilema praised one of his military trainers at Ndola’s Mushili camp, Major General Alick Kamizhi.

The President said this when he officiated at the ZNS golden jubilee ceremony at the Chongwe ZNS camp today.

President Hichilema, however, said the government is considering introducing voluntary ZNS training for young people.

“If I had my way, I would re-introduce National Service [compulsory training for school leavers]. I can see the difference between the population that did not go through this process and us who went through that process,” President Hichilema said.

He said the ZNS training he underwent, as a cadet, taught him discipline, commitment, hardwork and the desire to achieve.

“I have not announced that we will forcibly take our young people to National Service. I said if I had my way I would do it, because it is good breeding ground for good citizens,” President Hichilema noted.
“But what we are considering for now…. Further discussions are on to at least introduce voluntary [Zambia] National Service training for those young people who would wish to go through the process.”

The President said such a programme should be done “very quickly.”

“I lay it further on the table of the [ZNS] commander and other defence chiefs and the defence minister, home affairs minister and Cabinet; let us put this on the table. It’s very good for our country,” he said.

“One of the hallmarks of good leadership is to think ahead of how the future leadership looks like, when we are not there. What can we do to breed good leaders, going forward? Leadership in all spheres of life, not just military but civilian leadership! Training is a core issue in this regard. I’m convinced of what I’m saying and I will try and persuade others in the process.”

Meanwhile, the President reminisced about his ZNS training days.

“I must confess, without creating jealous in the [defence] services, that I’m closely associated with the [Zambia] National Service. Inviting me to officiate here invokes old memories of my being a cadet in the National Service – those old memories at old Mushili camp in Ndola,” President Hichilema said.

“I’m very delighted to see one of my trainers or instructors here – Major General Kamizhi. He was one of my trainers. Thank you very much, Major General Kamizhi.”

Maj Gen Kamizhi is former ZNS deputy commander.
The President appreciated Maj Gen Kamizhi for: “the training you gave us [of] log carrying, for long distances, limited meals.”

“Some of our colleagues went AWOL; they didn’t complete the training. But we who completed the training are delighted that we did that and we appreciated that, later in life. Thank you, Major General Kamizhi,” President Hichilema said.

He further thanked the ZNS for greatly contributing to Zambia’s development.

President Hichilema also told those who are about to be recruited in the Zambia Army, Zambia Air Force (ZAF), ZNS, Zambia Police and Zambia Correctional Service, to take that training with love, responsibility, and show commitment to duty.

“I have learnt a lesson in life; if you don’t love what you are doing, you will never succeed. You may be an average person in that field, but you’ll never be the best, because your mind is away from your body,” said President Hichilema.

Defence and service chiefs and defence minister Ambrose Lufuma, with several other ministers attended the event.
