A NAKONDE-based driver has escaped a near death situation after picking up three hitchhikers who later attempt to take his life and steal his car.

In what seemed to be a mere pick up and an easy way to make some extra Ngwees, Isaac Phiri, 25 , a driver in Mukoma village in chieftainess Waitwika’s area who transports transit vehicles to various destinations was attacked by a trio of criminals whom he offered a lift on his way to Zimbabwe.

According to ZANIS, Phiri started off from Nakonde taking a Chevrolet SUV motor vehicle destined for Zimbabwe.

But upon reaching Nakonde security checkpoint, Phiri found three men who asked for a lift to Mpika of which he agreed to pick them up at a fee.

However, around 04:00 hrs as they were on their way, the trio abruptly pulled out their attacking gear and gave Phiri a lesson he wouldn’t forget for a long time before even the sun could gather strength to beam.

One suspect, tied a rope around his neck in an attempt to strangle him while the two pounced on him like Bees defending honey to beat Phiri to pulp, until he surrendered the keys to save his dear life after sustaining cuts on the neck, head and hands.

Phiri was later abandoned and left for dead as he watched his assignment of delivering the black SUV speed off, living him choked up by the dust left from the accelerated vehicle which took no time to fly out of the vicinity.

But while thinking they had pulled a fast and slick operation, the trios’ joy was cut short as their countenance fell like leaves in the spring time after the vehicle developed a fault.

At the time the vehicle broke down, Phiri muscled up some strength and went to report the matter to the police who immediately launched investigations and started pursuing the case.

The police managed to apprehend two of the three suspects at the location where the vehicle broke down and recovered the SUV.

Muchinga Province Deputy Police Commanding Officer, Lucky Munkondya confirmed the grand theft auto stating that two suspects, Lukundo Simbeye and Blessing Chola were later apprehended at Ntenga village along Nakonde-Mbala road where the vehicle developed a fault.

The police have since detained the duo at Nakonde Police Station for allegedly stealing an In-transit motor vehicle and will appear in court soon.

The two suspects face a possible charge of aggravated robbery.
Meanwhile, Nakonde District Commissioner, Marvelous Sikapizye, has implored in-transit vehicle drivers to stay alert and avoid picking up strangers.

“If you do not have enough money for fuel, it is better you look for the money elsewhere unlike depending on giving people lifts.”
