A MAN of Chipata has died at the hands of the traditional dance group called the Nyau who took him in for counseling for his habits of selling household goods to finance his drinking habits.

48 year old Joseph Phiri’s lifeless body was found 150 meters from the Nyau site populary known as ‘Dambwe’ with bruises on the back, waist and buttocks indicating that he may have been flogged to death.

According to Eastern Province Police acting Commanding Officer Davies Simwanza, investigations have established that Phiri died in the Dambwe before his body was dumped in a drainage, meters away from the Nyau shrine.

Simwanza explained that prior to his death, Phiri had been reported to the Nyau Counseling Group by his wife Rachel Daka because he had been in the habit of selling household goods to finance his drinking habits.

Phiri is then reported to have been taken in for intense counseling in the Dambwe on August 9, after which relatives were even taking food for him with assurance that he was well.

However, on Thursday, Phiri was discovered dead.

Police have since detained two young men identified as Andrew Banda aged 23 and Commercial Nkhata aged 21 both of magazine compound Chipata and were part of the Nyau Counseling Group.
