THE Anti-Corruption Commission says it is working to win back public confidence lost in the past years.
ACC Board Chairperson Musa Mwenya says the commission plans on rebuilding the commission into a fortitude that previous years saw the prosecution of a former head of state and subsequently recovered assets worth over K60 million as well as the conviction of several senior public officials.
Speaking at the ACC Media breakfast in Lusaka today, Mwenya highlighted some of the plans that the antigraft body will undergo, among them included a self-introspection on the caliber of staff, their conduct, and overall welfare.
“In this regard, those officers that fail to live-up to the commission’s core values or ethical principles will have no place in the Commission,” Mwenya said.
He added that ACC will further ensure that it vigorously pursues any individual that engages in corrupt practices regardless of their social status, position or political persuasion.
Mwenya also urged the media to use there investigation journalism skills to unearth past, present and possible corrupt cases in instances where the law enforcement agency does not have adequate information.
and ACC director general Gilbert Phiri revealed that the commission conducted various activities towards the fight against corruption including sensitization activities to over 315,391 people countrywide.
Phiri a disclosed that the commission established 140 integrity committees in a bid to prevent corruption in different organisations and their various process in second quarter of this year.
Furthermore, ACC received a total of 169 reports of suspected corruption, out of these reports received, a total of 45 reports were non- corruption cases.
Of the total reports, 124 reports contained elements of corruption and 94 reports were authorized for investigations while the remaining 30 reports did not have sufficient details of the corruption offence to warrant investigations to be conducted.
By end of the quarter, the Commission concluded a total of 163 investigation cases. Six arrests were also made country-wide.
The commission had 10 cases before the Courts of Law, one case was pending judgement, one was pending appeal and one acquittal was recorded during the quarter under review,
Phiri further said the total number of investigated cases concluded this year so far is 188 out of 1,160 cases with 17 arrests effected.
“There were 35 cases before court and of these four have been concluded resulting in three convictions and one acquittal.”
A total of 338, 984 people have been sensitized on corruption throughout the country.
Meanwhile, Phiri disclosed that the Commission is currently increasing the number of call center lines from three to nine to accomodate more corruption reports.
