GARBAGE Movement (GM) has called on law enforcers in Lusaka to discipline residents who dump garbage in public places.
The Movement says indiscriminate dumping breeds the deadly cholera.
GM is an association of young Lusaka youths who go about cleaning places and sensitising people about the advantages of maintaining a clean environment.
GM spokesperson Stanley Mubasa told #Kalemba that there has been a continued trend of indiscriminate dumping of trash in Lusaka city.
Mubasa is disheartened that some Lusaka residents have gone further by dumping garbage, at night, along the railway line, roads and football grounds, despite having designated dumping sites.
“For too long, Lusaka city has had this problem; the blame has been entirely put on the LCC (Lusaka City Council), a situation we find to be unfair,” he noted.
“As responsible citizens, we have been engaging members of the public in Misisi, Chawama, Kuku and Kuomboka compounds on the need to find better ways of disposing trash.”
He said GM continues to carry out sensitisation activities to enlighten Lusaka residents on the effects birthed by a dirty environment.
“We are of the view that the Lusaka City Council needs our efforts to keep our city clean and help [to] manage potential cholera outbreak in future,” he said.
Mubasa further asked members of the public to take responsibility and stop the blame game.
Meanwhile, Mubasa called on the council management to be proactive and provide solutions on the garbage problem in Lusaka.
