DR LAZARUS Chakwera was last night declared President of Malawi after beating outgoing president Peter Mutharika with 852,166 votes.
The Malawi Electoral Commission announced the final result last night and sparking bedlam throughout Malawi.
Dr Chakwera becomes Malawi’s sixth President since independence in 1964.
He sailed under Tonse Alliance with UTM leader Saulos Chilima as his vice president.
The pair will be sworn in tomorrow in Lilongwe.
Chakwera polled 2,604,043 votes accounting for 58.5 % of the vote while Mutharika
got 1,751,877.
MMD candidate Peter Kuwani was distant third with 32,456 votes.
There were 6,859,570 registered Malawians.
Some 4,445,699 voters turned up to cast their ballots, representing 64 per cent.
There were 57,323 null and void votes.
Valid votes counted were 4,388,376.
