AFTER receiving a complaint of assault from a 16-year-old girl, the police officer on duty, Ramsey Nkosha told the victim he could only arrest the attackers if she agreed to have sex with him.
This happened in Kawambwa district of Luapula Province.
The girl gave into the Nkosha’s sexual demands, became pregnant and has since delivered.
But the orphaned girl with her one-month-old baby are now in the cold because Nkosha has refused to take responsibility and has since bolted.
She is now appealing to well-wishers for aid to support herself and the baby.
The pregnancy caused her to drop out of school at Grade 12 level angering Chief Mumkanta who has since threatened to report the man to police.
Her story has been published in today’s Sunday Mail.
According to the report, both Chief Munkanta and the victim confirmed the incident in an interview.
Chief Munkata said the the law must take its course against Nkosha who has abandoned the girl.
“The matter has been brought to me. I summoned the officer but his phone has been off. This matter should be dealt with by relevant authorities because Nkosha has ruined the life of the young girl, who is an orphan. He also abused his powers as a police officer by sleeping with the victim before opening a docket for her matter,” Chief Munkanta said.
The traditional leader said it is the duty of a police officer to act on a complaint.
Chief Munkanta said the girl does not have where to stay and moves in the village with the child on her back.
He said Nkosha’s behavior has frustrated his efforts to ending teen pregnancies and reducing the number of school dropouts in the chiefdom.
“For now, what I want is the law to take action against the behavior of the police officer,” he said.
When contacted for a comment, Luapula Province Commissioner of Police Chilije Nyirenda said he will only resume work after a week.
