Zambia Police vow to crack the whip on bars

THE Zambia Police Service has warned that officers will “whip” anyone found patronising bars in the wake of a Presidential order to keep bars closed.

Last month, President Edgar Lungu ordered the closure of bars, casinos, gyms and restaurants to curb the spread of Coronavirus in the country.

Zambia has recorded 39 cases of the disease and one death.

Globally, over 1 million people have been infected and more than 50,000 have died.

Appearing on Diamond TV recently, police spokesperson Esther Mwaata Katongo said she did not expect people to patronize bars as the presidential directive was very clear.

Katongo said police had other important duties to perform and would not spare those who chose to defy the presidential order to stay away from bars.

“We will just come and whip you without warning you,” said Katongo while wielding a police baton.
