Health Minister Dr Elijah Muchima confirmed the case during a briefing today, explaining that the child likely contracted the virus through close contact with a previously infected family member.

The minister said the baby is currently under home isolation, receiving medical care, and is reported to be in a stable condition.

Dr Muchima added that in order to control the spread of the outbreak, health teams have intensified monitoring of all identified contacts to detect any early symptoms.

He said the affected family remains in home isolation, receiving support from medical professionals.

“The safety and well-being of the child are our priority, and we are closely monitoring the situation to ensure no further transmission within the household or community,” Dr. Muchima said.

Meanwhile, Dr Muchima stressed the need for community awareness to prevent the spread of the disease, urging the public to isolate infected individuals, practice good hygiene, and avoid close contact with suspected cases.

Further, the Health Minister appealed to the public to promptly report any unusual symptoms or suspected Mpox cases to the nearest health facility.

“Early detection is critical, especially when vulnerable individuals, like young children, are affected. Let us remain vigilant and committed to protecting our communities,” said Dr Muchima.

Mpox is a viral infection transmitted through close physical contact or contact with contaminated items.

Its Symptoms include fever, rash, and swollen lymph nodes, which can range from mild to severe.
