Mental patient beats up Kaoma traders for not wearing face masks

A MAN who was later discovered to have a mental illness beat up marketeers in Kaoma district of Western Province for not wearing facemasks.

The Government has made wearing facemasks in public mandatory to curb the spread of the Coronavirus in Zambia.

So far, 441 people have been infected with seven deaths and 117 recoveries while 317 people remain admitted to different isolation facilities around the country.

According The Zambia News Information Agency, Police in Kaoma arrested a former Senanga Secondary School teacher for beating up marketeers for not wearing face masks.

The man whose name was withheld acted under the guise of Council police officer.

He descended on marketeers were who were conducting their businesses without wearing face masks.

Both Police and Kaoma District Commissioner Kennedy Mubanga confirmed the arrest of man whom they said had a history of mental disorder.

Mubanga confirmed the man was former teacher at Secondary School.

It was reported that the man went to New and Old markets in Kaoma where he beat up people found without face masks claiming he was a law enforcement officer.

Mubanga said the man assaulted a woman at the market who later reported the matter to police and was immediately apprehended by the police.

After close scrutiny, the police discovered that the named man was a mental patient and dropped the assault case they had earlier slapped on the former teacher.

Mubanga later implored members of the public to always be patient with people with mental disorder.

He also urged police officers and the Council to sensitise the local people on the importance adhering to public health guidelines to prevent the spread of coronavirus.
