Revert to 2016 voters’ register, UPND tells ECZ

THE opposition United Party for National Development UPND has demanded that the Electoral Commission of Zambia ECZ reverts to the 2016 voters registers owing to numerous challenges the ongoing issuance of cards has posed.

UPND Chief Whip Situmbeko Musokotwane who is also Liuwa Member of Parliament, made this demand at a media briefing in Lusaka this morning at the party secretariat.

Dr Musokotwane contends that at the current pace the ECZ is issuing voters cards, it is impossible to reach the targeted nine million voters in the 30 days period of the process.

He said it would be more difficult to have a new voters register than reverting to the previous one which already has more than six million voters alive and eligible adding that going ahead with the current process, will be a disservice to the citizens because it would lead to less people voting.

Dr Musokotwane bemoaned the delay in officers arriving at sites of voter registration in several parts of Zambia leading to loss of days and wondered how the lost time will be compensated with some places running out of materials to issue voters cards, while the process is extremely slow.
