I received this below from an employer trying to help job applicants give themselves a chance to at least be considered. I hope it helps someone:
Hi Laura, I know as part of your civic duty you create awareness among job seekers on what employers would look for. We recently posted a job online and within 5 minutes of posting, there were responses. What this told me was that people did not take time to read the job requirements and about the organization, it was just about applying.
Today, I spent time reviewing the applications to shortlist and I was shocked at what we had received. The advert asked applicants to send a cover letter and CV to a given address. I have received emails with all the certificates attached (not following instructions). Some applicants attached docs on google drive and I did not have access. Do not even get me started on the content of the CVs. Education background includes Grade 1-4, 5-7, 8-9, 10-12. Some included their transcript of results for all colleges/universities they attended, some had a pink or blue background with calibri 9 as the font or some other font where I had to squint to read what was there.
The position required someone with an Agric qualification but I had people who had done Theology, Library Studies and whatnot applying. The CVs were not even tailored to the position, one would indicate that they were an election monitor, what has that to do with training farmers on vegetable production? The spelling mistakes were another thing.
Others were attaching all the certificates they have ever had as single documents and not properly labeled, just saying adobe. Why am I saying all this? As you do your civic education, please point out things that employers will not have time to do. You upload docs on google docs and do not give the employer access, they will not ask you to resend.
Another thing, some just wrote the cover letter in the application. Imagine, I need to upload the letter in our system, I need to open a blank doc, copy, paste save meanwhile I have 500 applications I need to go through. I am not sure there is an employer who would do that. Some CVs are like 10 pages long, on a template that the owner does not seem to understand.
These are just a few challenges I have experienced. I could fill pages explaining.
You can post this on your platform as you reach a lot of people. Thanks in advance
