21 year old self-proclaimed die hard fan of the ‘Try Again’ hitmaker, Janet Chipulu sneaked out of her home around 16:00 hours without informing her husband, and made her way to the concert where the artiste’s soulful lyrics and melodies were captivating the crowd.

Meanwhile back at home, Chipulu’s two children of the ages six and four were left without anyone to take care of them, forcing the landlord who stayed within the same yard, to step in and take care of the little ones until their mother moonwalked back at 22:00 hours.

Her husband, Amon Mulelwa aged 33, who clearly was not singing ‘Aweah’, dragged Chipulu to Matero Local Court, accusing her of neglecting her family duties in favour of concerts.

Mulelwa explained that his wife told him that she needed to ease her throat with some flying fish at the concert, citing her love for Yo Maps’ music as justification.

“I took a step of enrolling my children in a boarding school for custody, fearing for their lives and well-being. My wife has shown a complete disregard for her responsibilities, preferring her selfish pleasure seeking concerts and drinking over motherhood,” he said.

Mulelwa also disclosed that his wife prays that he experiences accidents at work and that one day she will have the opportunity to stab him while in his sleep.

In her defense, Chipulu claimed that she turned to alcohol because her husband was constantly cheating on her as he was having extra-marital affairs behind her back, breaking the sacred vows of their marriage.

“All I did was attend a concert to see Yo Maps perform and I didn’t neglect my kids instead, I left them with the landlord. I spent K100 on my ticket, and I’m placing the blame for everything that happened squarely on my husband’s shoulders. He drove me to drink and lose control,” she said.

The marriage between the couple seemed to be a marriage of convenience as it was revealed that Mulelwa and Chipulu got together due to an unplanned teenage pregnancy.

it was revealed that Mulelwa, impregnated Chipulu at the age of 13 while she was still in Grade 7 in 2017.

Presiding over the case, senior magistrate Lewis Mumba offered counsel to the couple, stressing the importance of taking time before committing to marriage.

“There is no shortcut in life especially when it comes to marriage. You were too young to fully grasp the responsibilities and challenges that come with marriage. A minor shouldn’t be rushing into such a decision, no matter how in love they think they might be,” he said.

Magistrate Mumba said marriage is for mature adults, not young ones and at 21, one should be focusing on their education and building a life for themselves.

“If you are not ready for marriage, don’t rush into it. Enjoy your youth, date, and learn yourself and others. Marriage can wait until you are both truly ready, both emotionally and financially.”

“Divorce is granted and you will share joint custody of your children, and no child maintenance is required. Your household goods will be divided equally, and as compensation for the seven years of your marriage, you will pay your wife K6000 as appreciation,” he ruled.

The magistrate further advised Chipulu to prioritise her education, imploring her to go back to school and work on improving her life, .
