A SECURITY guard of Lusaka’s Mtendere Compound is to part company with a K1,000 from his meagre salary all because of his unsanitary social media behaviour.
The Lusaka Magistrates Court fined the 21-year old employee of Bisck Security K1,000 after finding him guilty of posting seditious material on his Facebook.
Aaron Chipampe had initially pleaded not guilty
two counts of Seditious practices and
Possession of offensive Weapons or materials.
He appeared before principal resident magistrate Idah Phiri, and state Michael Nyundwe prosecuted the matter.
Particulars of the offense are that Chipampe on unknown dates but between September 1, 2023 and September 8, 2023 in Lusaka jointly and whilst acting together with other persons unknown, published Seditious material on a Facebook group page called Ichilenkalipa Mu Zambia under Kah Sky Love profile advocating the desirability of a coup in Zambia by sending a posting which read, “Chi HH chilefwaikwafye coup.
In count two, Chipampe had in his possession an offensive weapon namely rubber pistol without lawful authority or excuse.
And on September 11, 2023 an arresting officer in the matter instituted an investigation by engaging the Ministry of Education Curriculum Development specialist and Ministry of Defence for interpretation of the words
Ministry of Education interpreted that the words mean, “HH being referred to should be removed from his position by a coup”, which is an unlawful seizure of power from a government.
The Ministry of Defence revealed that advocating for a coup endangers the peace of the country and such should not be tolerated and that the defence force does not support the abuse of the cyber space.
In rendering judgment yesterday, magistrate Phiri found Chipampe guilty of Seditious practices and convicted him but she acquitted him on possession of a pistol for lack of evidence from his employer.
In mitigation, Chipampe begged the court for leniency saying that he was a bread winner of the family and had a one year old child.
“I am asking for the court to forgive me, i am the bread winner of the family, there will be no one to look after the child who is one year six months. Even now they are waiting for me to provide food for the family. My parents in the village are waiting for me to send the K20 I have for medicine,” he said.
However, the court said the rate at which social media is being abused in the country is worrisome and people need to be taught a lesson.
Magistrate Phiri warned that such offences are serious and if left unattended to can cause condermination in the country.
“The sentence of Seditious practices goes up to Seven years imprisonment or a penalty unit of K6,000. I will exercise maximum leniency and sentence you to a fine of K1,000 in default to six months with hard labor effective today,” she ruled.

Speaking a little earlier on BBC’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg programme, Jason Oppenheim, a real estate agent in Los Angeles, says some landlords are breaking the law by raising rents more than 10% high than pre-disaster prices.
“We’re having landlords taking advantage of the situation,” says Oppenheim, who stars in the reality show Selling Sunset about LA’s luxury real estate market.

“There are price gouging laws in California, they are just being ignored right now…it’s illegal to take advantage of a natural disaster.”
