A 46 year old Kabanana man has given up his fresh breeze during this hot October afternoon after his mouth betrayed him by spewing insults during a court session at Lusaka’s Matero Local Court.

The vulger bemba man, Muteba Kabaso will have to spend the night at Matero East Police Station after avoiding the wise saying of his ancestors, “think before you speak” and calling the court ‘styopet’.

Kabaso was sued by his tribal cousin and land lady, Violet Banda aged 52 to court on allegations that he threw her Samsung smart phone in the toilet after he discovered it in his wife’s hand bag.

Banda had entrusted Kabaso’s wife with her Samsung smartphone to keep it safe during a marital disagreement with her husband.

But when Kabaso discovered the phone, he became enraged and tossed it into a pit latrine.

When asked by the court if he indeed dropped the phone in the house of faecal matter, Kabaso admitted to doing so.

He said committed the act because he felt emotional and disrespected by his wife who did not consider his position as the head of the house by keeping another person’s phone in their house.

Following his Kabaso’s admission, magistrate Lewis Mumba ordered him to compensate Banda with a K500 which she said was the price of the phone as he had no rights to throw the phone in the toilet, irrespective of the circumstances.

But this judgment only flared up Kabaso’s temper who promptly turned into a political cadre at Soweto market and started to raise his voice in court, stating that the judgement was unfair.

“Why should I pay her K500 when the same phone broke my marriage? It is better I sleep in police cells than paying this woman for that phone. This is being stupid,” Kabaso told the court as the people in attendance muttered.

After causing the chaotic scene that left the entire court gallery in awe, the session went on recess.

When Magistrate Mumba came back, it was not a laughing matter, he gave Kabaso a reward for his outburst – a night to cool his temper and cleanse his insulcious lips in a police cell.

“How can you call the court stupid? The court has simply passed a judgment following your admission… The case here was compensation for a phone which you pleaded guilty to. The court will order that you remain remanded in police cells for a night for insulting the court,” said Magistrate Mumba.

And just like that, the bemba mouth champion, Kabaso was escorted to police cells in the hot ring rounded sun of Lusaka as he spends Independence Eve in police custody, where he will likely have a newfound appreciation for the consequences of his words.
