Lusaka gospel musician in court on drug charges

A LUSAKA-based musician yesterday denied trafficking 10.3 kilograms of Methamphetamine before Lusaka Magistrate’s Court.

Dickson Phiri, 36 a businessman of Kabanana area in Lusaka pleaded not guilty to two charges of trafficking psychotropic substances and use of motor vehicle to carry, conceal and convey psychotropic drugs without authority, before magistrate Chinuda Chibaula.

It is alleged in count one that Phiri on June 17,2021, trafficked 10.3 Kilogrammes of Methamphetamine without lawful authority.

In the second count, it is alleged that on the same date, Phiri, while in Lusaka, used an unregistered Toyota Allion to carry, conceal and convey psychotropic drugs without authority.

The singer who DEC believes has not been singing under the capture of Holy Spirit but under the influence of hardcore drugs had been on the commission’s wanted list for several months and was eventually arrested on June 17, 2021 with eight others.

Phiri’s arrest was in relation with the case involving Amon Mutawale, 37 of Kapwelyomba and Chimbiya Banda, 31 of Libala South, who were apprehended at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport (KKIA) on June 11, 2021 for trafficking in 10.3 Kilograms of Methamphetamine.

The contraband was concealed in Children’s Books in a box that was destined to be couriered to Auckland in New Zealand.

As Phiri and his co-accused appeared at the Lusaka Magistrates Court yesterday, he was not with his usual colourful swag complete with pointed shoes but wore a hoody and avoided cameras and eye contact with onlookers.
