In this second of the 12-part series, I am sharing from chapter two of my book. Enjoy reading and send your comments.
A certain businessman once acquired rights to start a mine. Results from the prospecting efforts showed the presence of large deposits of gold underneath the ground.
He acquired all the necessary plant and machinery and employed people to start mining activities. They continued digging for some time without finding gold. Meanwhile, the businessman had to continue meeting all the operational costs to keep his dream of finding gold afloat.
A couple of months passed before a traveler, another businessman from out of town stopped by to say hello. The owner admitted that it had been a challenge as the mining efforts had not yet yielded any gold. To which the out-of-town businessman responded by offering to buy the mine. The owner refused, intimating that he would continue digging until they found the gold.
They continued to dig several months more without finding the gold they were digging for. The out-of-town businessman passed by the second time, on his way back home. By this time, the owner of the mine was now getting desperate as things had become worse from the first time that they had the conversation.
After much persuasion, they agreed on a sale deal. The price wasn’t as lucrative because the owner needed money urgently and had grown frustrated on account of not finding the gold as quickly as he would have hoped. The out-of-town businessman used the fact that they hadn’t found gold as a bargaining point to push the price down.
The new owner of the mine paid off the full price and continued to dig. It may sound unbelievable but they only needed to dig one foot (about 30 centimeters) more and eureka! they hit the gold. One foot as in 12 inches, or thereabouts.
Lesson:
Imagine how close the original owner was to finding the gold at the time he was giving up. The next time you are tempted to give up on your dream, think again. You may just be about to hit the gold. After all the effort, time, money and resources that you will have put into achieving your dream, you may sell all that for a song when in fact, you could well be just one foot from the gold you have been digging for.
