GREEN Economy and Environment minister Collins Nzovu says protection of the environment goes hand in hand with economic growth.

Addressing the media and stakeholders at the launch of the Africa Climate Week at Protea Hotel in Lusaka, Nzovu said good policies that protect the environment are key to the growth of the economy.

He said President Hakainde Hichilema’s commitment to addressing issues to do with the environment can be seen through the creation of the Ministry of Green Economy and Environment where Nzovu said he was privileged to be minister.

Nzovu said his ministry was created to ensure proper coordination, management and conservation of our environment.

“… allow me to begin by quoting a paragraph from the speech of a global icon of our lifetime, Nelson Mandela after his election as the first black president of the Republic of South Africa … I quote: ‘Each time one of us touches the soil of this land, we feel a sense of personal renewal. The national mood changes as the seasons change. We are moved by a sense of joy and exhilaration when the grass turns green and the flowers bloom -Nelson Mandela’ … The thinking of Nelson Mandela 30 years ago on the subject of the environment resonates well with the thinking and passion that the new dawn government of his excellency Mr Hakainde Hichilema, President of the Republic of Zambia, have today. As we speak this morning, the government is working on legal and policy reforms on the environment, and on ensuring that we combat the adverse effects of climate change. The core objective is to protect our environment for the benefit of the current and future generations,” Nzovu said.

He said President Hichilema does not mince his words when it comes to the environment.

“He has included climate change in the Eighth National Development Plan (8NDP). The inclusion of intervention measures in the 8NDP is to ensure that by 2026, the new dawn government will be measured on how well it would have protected the environment during its first term of office. Protection of the environment goes hand in hand with economic growth. Good policies that protect the environment are key to the growth of the economy,” he said. “I am pleased to further mention that another milestone that government scored is the increase in the allocation of Constituency Development Fund (CDF). Part of the CDF will be invested in protecting the environment.”

Nzovu further said the government is willing to work with all sectors of society, adding that this was the reason WWF-ZAMBIA had organised the media breakfast.

“This is in recognition of the important role that the media plays and to show our commitment to this cause – protection of the environment. To our all-weather partners, WWF Zambia, I wish to inform you that as the government, we have been closely watching the good works that you are undertaking in various districts of Zambia. The government is aware that through the voices for climate change, WWF Zambia is supporting various activities in six districts, namely: Mazabuka, Itezhi Tezhi, Chirundu, Siavonga, Kafue and Chikankata. Government is proud of you and wishes to encourage you to continue with these noble works that helps transform the lives of the people while protecting our environment,” Nzovu said.

Nzovu said it is gratifying that WWF Zambia is working with the media to ensure that community voices are heard.

“In this regard, I am informed that with support from WWF Zambia, many media personnel have been trained as climate change writers. The journalists have gained more knowledge on understanding what climate change is. This will go a long way in information dissemination and awakening the masses to the adverse effects of climate change on their lives and the environment and how they can mitigate and adapt to the changing times,” said Nzovu.

He also commended WWF for taking a stance to work with Zambian youths.
