Wildlife Crime Prevention (WCP) has partnered with the Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW) and the Zambia Airports Corporation Limited (ZACL) on a campaign to raise awareness on illegal wildlife trade.
This came to light during the launch of the “Worth More Alive” campaign at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport in Lusaka today.
The awareness campaign will be focused on Zambia’s biggest points of entry.
Speaking during the event, ZACL communications and brand manager Mweembe Sikaulu said the “Worth More Alive “campaign is targeting international and domestic travellers coming in and out of Zambia.
Sikaulu said the goal is to reduce wildlife trafficking through the international airports by informing travellers about the importance of wildlife.
“Travellers are informed about legal penalties applicable to offenders caught in illegal possession of wildlife products and how to recognise and report suspected wildlife crime to the appropriate authorities,” she said.
And WCP Awareness programme manager Luwi Nguluka said the campaign is more than just sculptures and posters at the airport
“It is the physical representation of the principles passed on to us by our forefathers. Dr Kenneth Kaunda, after whom this airport is named, was a firm believer in the need to conserve our wildlife. He was a true conservationist who believed in sustainable management of natural resources to better the lives of the people who live with it,” said Nguluka.
And legal affairs assistant director Victoria Musonda bemoaned that wildlife continues to be threatened by illegal wildlife trade.
“The Ministry of Tourism with support from various incorporating partners has a huge task of ensuring the wildlife is protected and conserved through various interventions,” said Musonda.
