ZESCO says the emergency tariff hike will be implemented from November 1, 2024 to January 31, 2025 as a temporary measure to address the current energy crisis.
The utility’s spokesperson Matongo Maumbi noted that the tariff adjustment is solely intended to raise the needed financial resources to support power imports required to partially meet the power supply shortfall arising from the drought induced hydropower generation deficit.
On Thursday, the ERB approved the national utility’s reapplication to hike electricity tariffs with consideration of tariff affordability, the impact of load shedding on Zambians, and the utility’s financial performance and viability.
In a statement, Maumbi said despite the hike in tariffs, low income households, consuming up to 200kWh per month will experience a 20 percent tariff reduction which will benefit over 730,000 customers.
Small and Medium Enterprises using up to 100kWh will also enjoy reduced rates as told by the spokesperson.
Meanwhile, only maximum demand customers will experience the hike in tariffs to enable Corporation import sufficient power.
And current tariffs for water utilities and social services will remain unchanged to ensure continued access to affordable water supply and essential services.
“ZESCO also acknowledges the conditions attached to the ERB’s approval and is committed to fulfilling them. Further details on these conditions will be shared in due course.”
“We extend our gratitude to our customers and the public for their continued support during this challenging time,” said Maumbi.
