PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema has told students across the country to graduate with skills to render to society instead of speaking good English without the ability to deliver services.
Officiating at the 18th Rusangu University graduation ceremony in Monze yesterday, President Hichilema stated that education was not meant entirely for speaking good English but delivery of services.
He urged the students to have an entrepreneurial mindset that could lead them into employing others or contributing to a company they work for through excellent skills.
The Head of State shared that students or graduates should not sit on their skills or potential if they are to see progress in life.
“Let’s be relevant to society, let’s be relevant to the needs of the people. Then education is meaningful. We don’t want to produce graduates that speak good English but cannot deliver services to the community, to society,” noted President Hichilema.
He said there was also need for universities to invest in research and development in order for it to address new challenges.
“I encourage you to research so you can offer solutions to our challenges. We need to devise research and development to lead to results such as improved genetics in our agriculture systems. We expect universes to invest in research and d development, to give solutions to the challenges we face,” he narrated.
President Hichilema explained that technology was also an integral part of developing a nation.
“Technology is a must inclusion, technology is a must in what we do. Without technology, we are doomed but technology is not enough but application and usage. This is important and it starts in the laboratory around here.”
“We encourage you to use your skills to
employ someone who needs a job. Even if you are not doing your own business, contribute to the growth of your company. There are no easy things around, I used to walk to school bare feet, born in a grass thatched house, no running water. No other children should be born in such a circumstance. We look forward to seeing exemplary members of society,” said the President.
