Esther Lungu explains herself to DEC

FORMER first lady Esther Lungu appeared before the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) offices in Lusaka Tuesday morning for questioning over 15 flats the Commission claimed she had abandoned in State Lodge area.
Esther was accompanied by her husband, Edgar Lungu, lawyers Tutwa Ngulube and Makebi Zulu along with busloads of women who had been rounded up by PF officials to go and put up a show outside the DEC headquarters as she was being quizzed.
With a multitude of police officers deployed within the vicinity of the Commission, it was guaranteed drama which escalated with the arrival of ruling UPND cadres who turned up, to claiming they had gone to provide back-up support to the police.
However, one UPND cadre earned himself slaps and kicks from officers plus a detention when he attempted to stop a vehicle in Esther’s entourage after spotting PF-aligned Facebook politician Chilufya Tayali inside.
Another UPND cadre slammed his hand on the slow-moving Range Rover carrying Lungu and his wife, which attracted a vicious reaction from PF national chairman Davies Chama.
But the tension was immediately defused by alert police officers before it would escalate from an exchange of Bemba insults to exchange of knuckles.
Once Esther was ushered in the DEC premises, the situation calmed down under the heavy blanket of police.
After sipping tea and coffee with few questions, Esther emerged from the DEC offices and was driven away without speaking to the waiting journalists.
Her lawyer, Makebi Zulu said she had furnished the DEC with a title deed of the land and cleared all queries saying if the Commission is to escalate the matter, then it will be nothing but a witch-hunt.
DEC spokesperson Mathias Kamanga said the Commission will issue a statement on the matter at an appropriate time.
