FIRST Quantum Minerals (FQM) recently organised a business clinic aimed at equipping local small and medium enterprises (SMEs) with essential skills for growth and sustainability.
Held under the theme “Driving Local Economic Growth Through Sustainable Partnerships,” the annual event brought together local business owners and FQM executives to explore collaborative opportunities.
The clinic, conducted in partnership with the Zambia Development Agency (ZDA), is part of FQM’s ongoing commitment to empower local businesses and promote sustainable development in the region.
Minister of Small and Medium Enterprises Development, Elias Mubanga commended the efforts of FQM and ZDA in fostering a conducive environment for local business growth.
He emphasised the importance of such initiatives in accelerating national development and encouraged other mining companies to follow FQM’s example.
Mubanga said building capacity and providing local entrepreneurs with access to new markets are crucial for Zambia’s economic growth.
“When mining companies local support businesses and create opportunities for them, Zambia’s development will accelerate,” Mubanga said while assuring Government’s commitment to ensure local businesses fully participate in the mining supply chain and economy.
FQM Country Manager Godwin Beene highlighted the importance of removing barriers that hinder small businesses from accessing broader markets.
Dr Been said over the past four years, FQM has supported 145 businesses through training and disbursed K6.7 million in microfinance grants.
ZDA Regional Coordinator Andrew Hachibe expressed enthusiasm for the partnership with FQM and shared that the ZDA is working closely with FQM to develop an action plan focused on impactful training programmes and initiatives that will unlock new opportunities for the Kalumbila business community.
The business clinic serves as a vital platform for local enterprises to gain practical knowledge, build networks, and integrate into the mining supply chain, contributing to the overall economic growth of Zambia.
