THE Zambia Meteorological Department has cautioned water transport users and fishers to stay away from water bodies this week.
This follows an advisory issued by the department last week that some parts of the country will record strong winds especially on the water bodies.
The department’s senior meteorologist Peggy Thole revealed that this week will record a significant drop in temperature and an increase in wind speeds especially over the Eastern and Southern parts of the country.
Thole disclosed that the meteorological team also saw an increase in wind speed and some cloudy weather conditions over Eastern, Muchinga, Luapula, Northern, Lusaka, Central and some parts of Southern provinces.
She attributed the cold weather to the source of the airflow coming from the south east which happens to be a cold region therefore affecting airflow.
For the water transport users and fisheries, she advised that they wait until the department gives them a go ahead as a way of saving lives.
“We have a warning to the transport users and fisheries. From today (Sunday) up to Saturday, we see strong winds and low temperatures,” revealed Thole.
“Stay away or take precautionary measures. Usually the wind gets stronger on the waters, it’s better to suspend water activities like the transport and fishing. You have to resume when we see a change.”
