GOVERNMENT and the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) have launched a US$450 million programme aimed at enhancing agriculture value chains through infrastructure financing and policy reforms.
MCC chief executive officer Alice Albright stated that the initiative also aims to address food and nutrition security amid the ongoing drought.
During her courtesy visit to President Hakainde Hichilema at State House yesterday, Albright emphasised that the programme will boost agricultural productivity through targeted road infrastructure development, asset financing, and institutional strengthening.
She mentioned that MCC recently signed an Aide-Memoir with the Ministry of Finance on agreed commitments regarding the programme.
“This is meant to reshape the agriculture sector in Zambia through value chains. Together we work to have a programme that will not only develop the agricultural value chain but also nutrition,” said Albright.
“We are partnering on long term solutions to address the needs of the Zambian people because our target is to help the Zambians.”
She disclosed that it also seeks to promote economic inclusive growth to promote women, youths and the vulnerable.
President Hakainde Hichilema expressed his support for the MCC’s efforts, urging swift progress in the negotiations to initiate the programme’s implementation.
He highlighted the growing US-Zambia bilateral partnership and noted the increasing interest from the US business community in investing in Zambia.
The partnership between the Government and MCC represents a significant step toward reshaping Zambia’s agricultural landscape, aiming for sustainable growth and enhanced food security.
