Kasama head on collision claims 4 lives leaves several Injured


FOUR people reportedly of the same family are dead and several others injured following a head-on collision near Kasama, on Monday.

The accident occurred around yesterday morning at 05:00 hours on the Kasama-Mbala road, approximately five kilometers north of Kasama.

A Toyota Vitz traveling southbound collided with a northbound Tata truck belonging to Zambia Forest and Forestry Industries Corporation (ZAFFICO).

All four occupants of the Toyota Vitz were killed in the crash.

They have been identified as Gift Bwalya, the driver, Charles Mwape, Joan Bwalya, and Blessings Mapalo, all from Namulundu compound in Kasama District.

The driver of the Tata truck, Robert Sinyangwe, fled the scene after the accident.

Six passengers on the truck sustained injuries, with one person in critical condition.

Amos Mulenga, 23, of Henry Kapata Village, Kasama District, sustained suspected internal injuries and is unconscious.

Others injured include: Mathews Pambi, 30, and Justin Sinkala, 31, both of Henry Kapata Village, Kasama District,

The rest include; Victor Mulenga, 21, Morgan Mutale, 30, and Timothy Nkalamu, 56, all from Mulambe Village, Mungwi District.

Authorities believe the cause of the accident was the Tata truck driver failing to stay in his lane, though, police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga said Investigations are ongoing.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and wish a speedy recovery to the injured,”added Hamoonga.

He said the bodies of the victims have been transported to Kasama General Hospital for a postmortem.
